POLITICAL THRILLERS. (CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND REVIEWS)
CRITICAL REVIEWS: POLITICAL THRILLERS
1. What is a political thriller film?
2. Why are viewers so fascinated with political thrillers?
A political thriller is a plot based on a film or a novel with the backdrop of a political power struggle. They usually involve various extra-legal plots, defence department, foreign affairs department
and even top financial institutions. These are largely constructed to give political power to someone,
while his opponents try to stop him. Geopolitical thrillers: They can involve national or international
political scenario as in most 007 films or in John Le Carre novels.

Why are we so enthralled or fascinated with political thrillers?
After I saw the movie Art of War featuring Wesley Snipes, I became intrigued by the political thriller
genre. I began thinking of what would happen if the VILLAIN won?
Are there any political thriller movies where the villain wins?
It all depends on who the villain is. What are the profile or traits of the heroes and villains of
political thrillers? Do villains win in real-life political dramas?

AIR FORCE ONE (1997). Political Action Thriller
AIR FORCE ONE (1997). Political Action Thriller
AIR FORCE ONE (1997). Political Action Thriller
Cast: Harrison Ford: as President Marshall
Gary Oldman as Korshunov
Glenn Close as Vice President Bennett
Directed by- Wolfgang Petersen
Written by- Andrew W. Marlowe
The plot
The film opens at a Conference Hall in Moscow where the US president is taking part in Geopolitical discussions. President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) boards Air Force One with his family and advisers after his speech vowing to never negotiate with terrorists. Later, onboard, the Air Force One, a group of terrorists led by Ivan Korshunov hijacks the flight. The President is forced to improvise an immediate response to this critical situation. Feigning escape, he hides in the aircraft. Against all odds, he had to race against time to rescue his family and everyone else on board.
GLENN CLOSE
Comments
Many of the action scenes take place in the bowels of the jet, down in the galley and luggage areas.
There is also a counterplot set in Washington, where the vice president (Glenn Close) learns from the attorney general that the president may be technically "incapacitated,'' and that Close should consider taking over.
There are some good action sequences, in which people enter and leave aeroplanes at high altitude- hardly recommendable. The film is mostly stapled together out of INGREDIENTS from many other films about Presidents, terrorists, hijackings, hostages, aeroplanes, political clashes and cat-and-mouse chases.

Critical reviews of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
In an introduction, we meet a young Ryan who signs up for the Marines after watching 9/11 in helpless horror. He’s injured in battle, restored to full health in the rehabilitation centre by the medical care of Cathy (Keira Knightley) and recruited by veteran CIA agent William Harper (Kevin Costner).
While recovering, he’s recruited as a secret CIA analyst and uncovers suspicious business dealings by Cherevin (Branagh), a Russian businessman who wants to bring America to its knees.
Ryan is expected to keep a covert eye on sinister global financial transactions. it was when he came across a market irregularity so he heads to Russia for further investigations.
He discovered that Viktor Cherevin ( Kenneth Branagh) is planning to wreak havoc on Wall Street. Can Jack hack the Russian computers before Viktor discovers the intruder?
COMMENTS
Jack Ryan character has regenerated for the fourth time. Now with the face of Chris Pine, he’s in remarkably good shape.
The film is formulaic, but Branagh handles the direction very poignantly; the central office-break in is very powerful done, with the three leads playing cat and mouse, while Kevin Costner offers a few rounds from the balcony. Hardly earth-shattering but efficient and entertaining nonetheless.

POLITICAL THRILLERS
REVIEWS- ART OF WAR-I.WESLEY SNIPE
The Art Of War-I
In this film. Wesley Snipe plays as Neil Shaw, a covert operations specialist who's working for the United Nations, specifically for the Chief of Security Eleanor Hooks (Anne Archer) and Secretary-General Thomas (Donald Sutherland). Shaw must uncover a dangerous international plot by foreign agents who want to disrupt the peace and trade treaty between the US and China.
The assassination of the Chinese ambassador to the U.N. could very well destroy the trade deal and sever diplomatic relations between the two nations. Shaw was specifically assigned to keep tabs on the Chinese ambassador with fellow agents Bly (Michael Biehn) and Novak (Liliana Komorowska), but he was wrongfully accused of the ambassador's murder. He quickly realised that he was being framed, but by whom? And why?
With the help of a Chinese translator - Julia Fang Shaw sets out to unravel the mystery, discover the assassin, clear his name by staying one step ahead of the FBI and the Chinese Mafia angrily searching for him. Would he succeed to bring the culprit to justice?
Comments
The Art of War is not a spectacular film but it has an excellent cast and intriguing story. The story was quite predictable with some of the “twists” you could even anticipate. The film has some well-done action scenes and impressive stunt work. The final fight between Snipes and the villain was the highlight. I got the feeling that some of those scenes were improvised by Snipes himself.
Geopolitics today
The plot is still relevant today as it tries to understand the complex world of US/Chinese relations. The actors try to keep it interesting while keeping the pace going. Wesley Snipes once again uses his set of skills to survive in his struggle to uncover the culprit and bring them to justice. Overall, despite being quite predictable The Art of War has a first-rate cast and an interesting story that should keep your interest.

BRIDGE OF SPIES. Political Thriller
Working hypothesis-2: The Art of Negotiation
The tense "NEGOTIATIONS" over the recovery of one Russian spy for two Americans in 1960s Berlin are the real-life backdrop to this political thriller. The initial plan was to hand over one incarcerated Russian spy Rudolf Abel, in exchange for one CIA spy at dawn on the Glienecke bridge between East and West Berlin. (The so-called “Bridge of Spies”) Spielberg’s movie shows agonisingly tense, deniable negotiations in bad faith, with each side calculating and re-calculating their gains and losses related to how likely it was that their man had cracked under interrogation, given up secrets, and therefore becoming valueless as an asset. The KGB was outraged because the US was actually insisting on a two-for-one swap. They also wanted an American student named Frederic Pryor wrongfully imprisoned in East Berlin, a deal which Donovan insisted on for the swap to take place. 24/7 non-stop negotiation artwork. In fact, Spielberg uses this film to dramatize the ability to find grounds for settlement in a spy-swap. The power of "NEGOTIATION" proves that war is unnecessary to settle our disputes; how far do you agree with this working hypothesis?
